Projects / Experience

Historically, investment decisions on new power plants, load management, energy efficiency and transmission were made on the basis of integrated resource planning.  In a competitive market environment the challenge is to evaluate investment decisions in light of load forecasts, load shapes, market prices, fuel prices in a dynamic and volatile market environment.  EPG has experience in helping clients make decisions on new power plants, transmission lines, market design, power contracts, power portfolio management.  Examples of EPG projects are summarized below:

Assisting the California Department of Water Resources in managing its portfolio of 12,000 MW of power contracts by providing analytic and policy support in areas of market analysis, contract valuation, operating strategies, fuel strategies, and resource planning.

Assisting the Office of Ratepayer Advocates of the California Public Utilities Commission in evaluating utility resource plan proposals.

Review of new power plant licensing applications for development of peaking and combined cycle projects.

Planning for California’s Future Transmission Grid – Review of Transmission System, Strategic Benefits, Planning Issues and Policy Recommendations.  Prepared for California Energy Commission, October 2003.

California’s Electricity Generation and Transmission Interconnection Needs Under Alternative Scenarios – Assessment of Resources, Demand, Need for Transmission Interconnections, Policy Issues and Recommendations for Long Term Transmission Planning.  Prepared for California Energy Commission, November 17, 2003.

Scenarios for Meeting U.S. Electricity Needs in 2030 – Policy Issues and Infrastructure Challenges.  Released March 2004.
