Projects / Experience

The transition from a vertically integrated to competitive electric markets has resulted in a need to understand how market rules impact reliability and develop new reliability management tools and technologies.  To address these challenges, Electric Power Group principals worked with the Department of Energy national labs to establish the Consortium for Electric Reliability Technology Solutions (CERTS).

CERTS is a partnership among industry, national laboratories, and universities.  It was formed in 1999.  CERTS goal is to research, develop and disseminate new tools, and technologies to protect and enhance the reliability of the U.S. electric power system. The members of CERTS include the Electric Power Group, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, the National Science Foundation’s Power Systems Engineering Research Center, and Sandia National Laboratories.

CERTS is working in four areas:

Real-Time Grid Operations and Reliability Management

Reliability and Markets

Distributed Energy Resources Integration

Reliability Technology Issues and Needs Assessment

EPG team leads the CERTS activities on real-time grid operations and reliability management.  Voltage management and grid management tools developed by EPG provide electric system operators a better overview of the health of the grid in real-time and are being utilized by NERC and ISOs. Examples of monitoring tools in use or development include:

ACE-Frequency Monitoring

Voltage / VAR Management

Real Time Dynamics Monitoring System Using Phasors

Ancillary Services and Suppliers Performance Monitoring

EPG work on Reliability Solutions focuses on:

Identifying key reliability management problems and issues

Developing metrics and algorithms to analyze and assess problems

Developing prototype tools and technologies for use by operators and reliability coordinators to address key reliability management problems.

Working with ISOs and Reliability Coordinators on Wide Area Reliability Monitoring

Wide Area Monitoring Applications for system stability, voltage, frequency, ancillary services, and security monitoring using phasor technologies.
