Simon is a software expert and system developer and has extensive experience in modeling and simulation, data-centered graphics, 2D/3D visualization, virtual reality, back-end database, and their applications in power industry. Simon’s responsibilities at Electric Power Group include: research and develop new software tools and analytical solutions for the U.S. electric power grid by involving computer systems, visualization technologies, and power system operations disciplines to conceptualize solutions, develop prototypes, work with electric power industry to beta test prototypes, disseminate and commercialize the new software tools and technologies.

Previously, Simon was with Simplylook.com where he worked on the development of client/server based real-time graphics engine: a data-centric visualization application tailoring images in a variety of graphics file formats to the native format of the device browsers and allowing interaction with the images with unique user-interfaces for wireless devices.

Prior to joining Simplylook.com, he worked as a Post-doctoral Researcher at I-CARVE Lab and eMedia Center, University of Wisconsin - Madison.  In this capacity, he was responsible for virtual reality application in design research, image-geometry hybrid visualization research, and visualization and system administration. He focused on research/prototype/develop new virtual reality systems to provide an intuitive and an easy-to-use environment for engineers and designers by facilitating 3D-hand motion tracking, voice command, and stereoscopic geometric visualization. As the system administrator, he supervised the Center’s computing resources and visualization theater, developed various computational/scientific visualization demos, and consulted and trouble-shoot for faculty, staff, and students on all aspects of visualization computing, including large-format visualization, large-format stereographic display and virtual reality environment.

Simon received a Ph.D. majored in Computer Aided Design from Shanghai Jiaotong University, China, in 1998.
